    The Healing of Hibernation in Winter 2024

    I think we have agreed that talking about the weather is deeply embedded in the Australian culture. Actually…. it is not just talking about the weather, but more complaining 😂. Too cold, too hot, too wet, too dry, too windy… dare we say any more!

    In our health journey it makes sense to embrace each season for its’ healing potential. In Winter on a muscular skeletal level, it is a wonderful time to focus on joint mobility and muscle activation. For example, ensuring that our core muscles are working well to take pressure off our vulnerable neck, shoulders and sacral iliac joints. Getting deep abdominal and back stabilisers, alongside our glutes, are a great way to manage back health (-this is a very simple example!). Ensuring your joints are warm before your morning walks as per our mobility program is a great way to enhance ease and comfort of movement.

    As we continue our journey and the needs within our beautiful community change, I am constantly brainstorming to offer you options that may enhance your vitality and quality of life. The 4-week Body Therapy Program that I am offering in Term 3 will have the framework of the Foundation 15 Moves, to assist strength and mobility for legs, hips, core, and shoulders – in essence – the complete strength of the body. Over the 4 weeks, we will customise and ensure that the options that you take are the best for your structural and therapeutic needs.

    For anyone who cannot do floor work (laying down on the floor), this is ideal for you as all exercises can be customised to your needs. You will have technique, options and most importantly improved strength and mobility. For those of you who have been asking for some stronger options, yet still nursing injury or recovery, this program might be something for you, as you will be able to complete your injury recovery and continue supervised rehabilitation with me.

    This program has come about not only after our brain gym and agility session earlier in the year, but also your feedback and our shared goals of you maintaining your youthful vitality and recovery from any health challenges. This program is aimed to assist with an hour of gentle movement (rest as you need), education throughout the session, with strength, mobility, brain function exercises, and all major joint health with nurturing entertaining support 🤗.

    Remember…..

    The season of Westerly Winds is extremely “drying”. Look at your plants and see how they dry out more in these winds. Take time and consider drinking a little more water, increasing good fats / oils and check your magnesium and potassium intake. Some patterns with inflammation can be very simple to support and I hope that this can be your best winter yet!

    The hibernation energy of Winter can be extremely beneficial for our health journey. Have a look at nature and look at what is naturally occurring with nature going into a rest and rejuvenation mode. It is a great time for us to do the same.

    Winter is a great time to support your energetic body and continue to use what you once may have called “emotional wounds” into “embodied wisdom”.     Thursday 20th June 2024 Chakra Balancing Sound Healing. These sessions are a great monthly top up for your energetic body. Continuing the journey of transforming our wounds into profound healing wisdom. Using sound, aromatherapy, crystals, intention setting in the frequency of love and gratitude. 5.45pm 60 minutes $35.

    Tuesday 18th June Monthly Group Coaching and Question Answer Time: This is a small group session for participants to have affordable help and have their questions answered. There is never a coincidence of who will be in these sessions together. Multimodality covering any questions specific to inflammation, gut health, liver health, injury recovery, sleep improvement, immune concerns and nutrition. 2 hour session $55.

    Winter Logistics in All Sessions

    (Please accept my mothering and care…. 🫶🏽)

    As you would be aware, the heaters are working at Corlette Hall. Please make sure that you have enough layers to be warm or cool enough, depending on your personal thermostat. The following hints and tips are to assist your muscles and emotional health to help you stay relaxed and balanced post sessions.

    Morning Sessions: Even though the Hall is heated, the floor is cold of a morning – sometimes really cold. A thick blanket under your mat or extra cushioning is recommended. There are overflow blankets on top of the cupboard for under the mats, that way doonas can be available for the cold frogs 🤗.

    Afternoon and Evening Sessions: Be mindful on sunny days, the hall in the afternoon will be warm – sometimes very warm. For afternoon and evening sessions, please have extra layers for your departure. Maybe an over jacket and scarf to assist your muscles staying relaxed. For the next couple of months, it will be dark on departure, so please make sure that you have enough light to access your car safely.

    Holistic Health Coaching

    This is a deep dive into your history and patterns to map out the best plan for your rejuvenation. This can be across layers of your physical, emotional and energetic body. Using multi modalities and special attention to your bio-individuality, we work out a short term and long-term plan to stabilize, consolidate and strengthen your overall health.     Session 1: Session One, complete health history and support over patterns and experiences including medications, actions, injuries and so much more.

    Between session 1 and session 2, Maree will research and converse with you gathering more information to ensure that the next steps in your journey are the best steps for you.

    Session 2. Implementation of plan. This includes nutritional, emotional health, mindset, exercise, weight management, pain and inflammation support, meal planning, gut health, cellular changes, immune function, coping with stress as well as any specific goals identified in session one.

    Session 3: Approximately 6 weeks later a follow up session. Prior to this, Maree will be in contact with you via text, email or in passing to support you with any further questions.

    Welcome to Term 2 2024

    Breathwork

    Breathwork has become more popular over the last years which from my perspective is awesome! The more people practicing their conscious breathing, the healthier our community and the healthier our larger world will become.

    In the last weeks of last term, we were able to record some specific breathwork patterns. In the immediate links below, there is the full 20 minute workshop as a YouTube link. I have been able to edit the 20-minute workshop into 3 further clips that are around 3 minutes each in length. The three techniques are Balanced Breathing, Energising Breath and the Calming Breath. I have put them all as links here as well as in the YouTube description of the 20-minute workshop. This is to make it easier for you to find in the future. 🤗

    Please remember, your journey is to find techniques that work for you and keep you with the health and quality of life you desire. There are thousands of techniques and variations, so keep me posted of your needs and I can record more for your at-home practice.

    What type of Yoga do we do?

    The sessions delivered are Therapeutic Yoga – meaning we do physical, emotional and energetic work for the purpose of Health Improvement, specific to the needs of the people in the room. This is in a nurturing and uplifting environment to help you improve your emotional health and energetic body, just as much as your physical body.

    When you research styles of Yoga, there will be postulations of the “number” of styles or types or philosophies of Yoga. There are many different styles, different Gurus, different linages, different pathways all due to elements such as country of origin, original Guru, the legacy of living the technique and then the modernisation of these techniques. This is the main reason why I educate you in our room about Hatha Yoga being an umbrella term for all of the styles that I have mentioned above, and “Raja as a higher umbrella above Hatha”…. (this subject is an essay Thesis in its’ own right).

    In my training and many years of guiding and supporting individuals and groups, I studied many styles of Yoga. Qualified in Iyengar, Ashtanga, Satyananda, Yogalates, Vinyasa, Pilates, Hatha, Raja, Kundalini, Restorative, The 5 Tibetans and more including Pre-Natal, Neo-Natal, Pelvic Floor, Children, Geriatric, as well as authoring and delivering my own training programs (I didn’t sleep much for a while there😂) An immersion into the above styles was essential in the process of my attaining an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Yoga from the Australasian Yoga Institute. As part of this training, I was one of the first recognised 1000 hours Instructors, and after 20 years of teaching was recognised as a Yoga Master by Registration Category after completing over 10000 hours of contribution to Yoga with instructing, mentoring and educating. Beyond these qualifications, there are other Advanced Diplomas, University and Post Graduate qualifications as well.

    Currently, I am levelling up again with the knowledge I am studying in the framework of Integrated Medicine. This will just provide further structure into the health mapping sessions that I currently offer as well as further holistic depth into the workshops and retreats.

    A massive welcome to our new community members, a heartfelt thank you to the regulars and a huge welcome back to those of you who are now back in sessions after your Yoga sabbatical 😂. For those of you currently on Yoga sabbatical, I hope you know that you are welcome back, whenever the time is good for you, and that there is no need to dodge me if you see me at the shops… unless of course you are leaning on the shopping trolley 😂.

    It is such a gift to be a part of your day-to-day goals and I truly love being a part of your life. As I listen to your changing needs and look at how to support you and our community in better ways, I have put on a few extra events this term.

    This update has a few extra events that I will also post on Facebook. If you have not had the chance to connect on Facebook yet, please feel welcome to send me a friend request, and also, to stay up to date please follow Port Stephens Chiropractic & Yoga and Inspired Vitality with Maree Frawley.
    I often feel the disappointment from people when they say they did not know that a specific event was on, so this might assist a better flow of information.

    To support the after-work crew and with the Hall not being available the first Thursday of the month I have decided to offer a Thursday evening class on the first Thursday of the month. A 5.45pm session commencing Thursday, 7th of March. Even if you only come once a month, it is great to see what options and techniques would better benefit your body. This way you can modify your home practice (even if that means beginning to remember that you forgot to do your Yoga – baby steps).

    As we move into Autumn, it is great to pay attention to our health to cope with some of the occurrences that Winter can offer us. Joints, immune system strength and lymph would be the top of our list, alongside your individual needs. Throughout the next workshops and retreats, I will be covering these topics in more detail, and as always, we will cover many tips and hints in our Therapeutic Yoga sessions.

    Therapeutic Yoga with Maree @mareerejuvenate

    A huge reoccurring discussion during and after class would be falls prevention and how to support yourself or another person after a fall. More importantly would be our overall agility and cognition with the prevention. So, after a comment in class that potentially you might be “too old by Term 2”, I have brought the Brain Gym and Agility for Living workshop forward into March.
    I hope you can support your health by being at this workshop.

    Logistical Comment for Corlette Hall: As we move into Autumn, please note the air-conditioning at the Hall will probably stay set to cool to assist the exercise classes that are also held there on various days. If you begin to feel cold, please start bringing an extra layer of warmth. There are blankets available as per usual. For the afternoon and evening crew, be mindful that it will be darker and cooler when you leave the Hall, so maybe start to prepare your Yoga bag accordingly.

    Agility for Living & Brain Gym

    Thank you to my dear “young” Yogi for making the comment, “I will be too old by term 2”, so I have brought this workshop forward. The idea behind this workshop is to support foundation agility, mobility, balance and strength in a safe environment that has supports, padding, equipment and security to go over movements of daily living, falls prevention and exercises for brain health. Covering all the foundations of how to move when you have had a fall or have an injury, how to support other people who have fallen, and of equal importance, daily and weekly exercises for your brain health, including memory function. I have been able to secure us the best space at Zone Active for Monday, March 11th at 12.30 – 2pm. $45 per individual or $70 per couple.

    Ayurveda – The Sister Science of Yoga

    After the success of the first round of this modality to support the equilibrium of the body, Part 1 is being held again Tuesday, 19th of March 1pm – 3pm at Nelson Bay. As part of this program, during the workshop we start to look at your constitution and Dosha, then commence a plan to support your health goals. This individual plan is coordinated in post workshop videos and feedback that support the needs of those in the room. Whether it is to support inflammation, injury management, cellular changes, digestion, moods, cardiovascular, immune, thyroid and so many more conditions, we will bring an umbrella and a holistic approach to your health journey.

    The Next Step in Ayurveda – the Sister Science to Yoga is scheduled for 30th of April, 1pm – 3pm.     As Term 1 is underway, we are getting to the exciting parts of workshops and continuing your journey of health and vitality as we progress step by step and week by week.

    I truly hear your requests of managing inflammation, recovery with cardiac challenges, blood pressure, cholesterol, digestive episodes including diverticulitis, colitis and IBS, and the many other immune challenges that we often talk about during, before and after our sessions. For this reason, I will continue to offer short workshops in a format that provide you enough practical knowledge that you can implement to get immediate improvements with your vitality specific to your individual needs.

    The Ayurvedic workshop is a great opportunity to look at:

    • Why the Yoga Postures and Breathwork we use in Therapeutic Yoga support subtle energies and the meridian lines I often refer to in our sessions.
    • Delving into your individual Dosha and why certain types of inflammation are triggered in your body. For example, why is it that some body types have growths, others rashes, cold & flu or joint inflammation or mucous build ups. A holistic look into nutrition, oxygen metabolism, water metabolism, electrics of the body, sleep and the specific needs of those in the room. Doshas move across our physical, emotional and soulful levels and how we balance these out.
    • A deeper look into the Craniosacral rhythms and why they are so important for your overall vitality. Techniques that you can use daily to balance these rhythms and a snapshot look into some of the Cranial Nerves.
    • Basic detox protocols as a starting point for daily, weekly and monthly vitality improvements.

    There will be ample time for discussion and specific action plans to improve your sleep, reduce anxieties, nutrition improvements, manage joint inflammation and also look at essentials of emotional health and astral hygiene. The great news is that the carry-over of discussion points can go over into the next workshops and our class as well as individual sessions together.

    Some Inspiration

    Since my teenage life, I have been witness to so many miracle recoveries even my own in so many areas. I am sure you have seen them in areas of your life or have read about them as well. When I think of the many case studies, it is hard sometimes for me to believe in the limitations that are often imposed on the human physical body on a cellular, physical or emotional level with permanent labels.

    The resonant frequency and vibration of words and labels can become an embodiment that is difficult to break free from. Meaning people become their label, their pain, their disease. You would be aware yourself that some words yield high vibration feelings and other words of diagnosis can be devastating in the emotions that are then felt. Labels of diagnosis, carry a meaning and our nervous system will react to the meaning that each label has. To break free from these meanings and frequencies here are some considerations.

    The Space of Energetic Healing

    The following is a Point of View Piece.

    Out of the many awesome conversations post class or before sessions during the last 25 years of Yoga sessions, one of my favourite answers to what a person has done for pain management or desire for recovery, is – “I have done everything!”. 

    The reason I love this answer, is that as soon as we move beyond the core of pharmaceutical and surgical discussions, there are whole chapters of modalities that are sitting in the peripherals, some new and mostly from ancient wisdoms.

    Luckily for those in the framework, of science and evidence-based practices, there is excellent peer reviewed science, that can marry the scientific explanations of energy healing modalities with these ancient practices. Thanks to the fields of electrical engineering, quantum physics and quantum biology (plus more), there is every reason to be looking into the potentials of other pathways to support your vitality.

    My experimentation of energetic healers began over 25 years ago, when I was working through spinal injuries and some symbiotic health challenges with that pain, including work issues, relationship challenges and health ailments that resulted in some steep and essential learning. Obviously, I was in the mainstream channels of medical support, however, it really felt like I was falling apart and I wanted something more – I wanted answers and solutions.

    From visits to Alchemists, Healing Circles, through to the more mainstream Intuitive Healers and Practices such as Reiki, massage, Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, I experienced past life regressions, intuitive readings, Chakra balancing and so much more than I have time to share here.

    My journey of moving out of pain, towards health, was something that I thought was external to me. Bring on the new substance, intervention, person, change of environment, exercise, mindset, detox, ideas in books and so much more. Another new direction came into my awareness, and I would take it. Like most people who are in the battle of dealing with acute and chronic pain – I was desperate! Basically, I was handing over my health to any person or promise who could assure me “they” or “that” could help me.

    At some point in that journey, I settled with some core mainstream physical supports including Chiropractic Care and my own daily practice of Therapeutic Yoga. The philosophy of traditional Chiropractic where the Miracle that Creates the Body, Is the Miracle That Heals the Body, was harmonious to my values of empowered health. My Yoga journey was far more complex, as I even managed to use Yoga to increase my pain and ill-health in my early experiences of Yoga. The many “styles” and pathways, years and thousands of hours of study with my Yoga study led me to my specialty of Therapeutic Yoga with all the injuries and ailments that can be supported through reconnecting mind and body.

    My immersion into Human Performance, Mindset, Neuroplasticity and getting a better way of moving beyond patterns that were triggering pain physically and psychosomatically was an awesome journey and information that I love empowering all walks of life with.

    I found that the journey of looking within and having mentors to remind and focus on the profound empowering message to continue to develop your connection with your own superconscious capability to heal – is the gift I love to share with my community of clients as well.

    If you move into experimenting with some of these healing forms:

    • Question the Practitioner, of their qualifications, self-care and experience. Their journey is to empower and support you.
    • If the technique feels in alignment with your beliefs and values, go for it! Remember the placebo effect is real. If you think the experience will or won’t work for you, you will be right!
    • Look for Practitioners who awaken your own belief and ability to tune into what your body, physically, emotionally and energetically is communicating with you.

    Embracing the belief that “We are a miracle to be celebrated”, provides foundation for my workshops, retreats and exclusive sessions. Continue to connect to the idea of the “Miracle that creates your body, is the miracle of healing in your body.” This can be awakened and supported in so many modalities if they align with your beliefs. Your beliefs and values are where it all begins – Live your best life!

    Often winter is about maintenance and injury management, and during term 3, quite a few of you not only rehabilitated your areas of concern, but have gone on to the next phase of recovery with increasing mobility, stable flexibility and even strength – So congratulations on your diligence of attendance and at home practice! Small incremental health gains 🤗.

    Chronic Injury Management and Acute Pain Management

    The simple takeaway would be to manage pain. Be proactive when you can.

    This is a subject that I speak to on the phone on behalf of Kevin with Chiropractic Care, as well as across all platforms of my programs. (The challenge in today’s digital environment is that once you put something into writing, you face the wrath of anyone with an opinion. I preface this section as being specific to my community and our long-term relationship and supporting the beautiful journey of vitality that we are on together.)

    So,

    When an injury occurs, what you do in the commencement of inflammation management can assist reducing pain, increase self-healing.

    When you are in an episode of chronic pain, I absolutely understand the need to just want to stay still and not really practice protocols. I also appreciate the use of heat, I practiced this for the best part of 15 years in my pinnacle of pain management. A cycle that did not get broken until I listened and enacted a different protocol. If what you are doing is not working, maybe try something else. By definition here “working”, your protocol should be launching you into stabilising and rehabilitating, rather than falling into another relapse of pain.

    Let’s break these subjects down into the best steps.

    Rather than following the RICER method. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Referral, many often fall into some type of pain management, anti-inflammatory and then rest in a position that would often be detrimental to the area of pain….. and also use heat.

    Remember, heat packs will temporarily relax an area and potentially help the area feel good. However, as a vasal dilator, you are actually contributing to further inflammation potential. Inflammation is reduced through vasal constrictor such as ice / cold packs. The cold treatment may not feel as pleasant at the time, but as an outcome of reducing pain and increasing healing potential, ice / cold treatment is a better choice.

    The ideal protocol. Ice/Cold 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 3 rounds. (ice pack should be in a towel – not direct to skin). Heat could be used before movement. After movement – ice/cold protocol. There are some injury management creams that promote cool and I really enjoy those, especially the natural ingredients.

    Falls & Balance

    Please keep working on your awareness of where you are in time and space to help you with navigating your environment. Over our lifetime as senses alter, many people begin to experience their environment mainly through their eyes. If they cannot see where they are going, then the risk of instability and potential loss of balance increases. Rather than using a balance of our senses including physical feeling through our feet, as well as mechanical issues with hip placement and forward head position, we can be at risk with loss of footing and balance challenges.

    Throughout my career, I have seen too many people improve their balance and vitality to ever accept that aging and regressions are a one-way street. One of the memorable stories would be the 75-year-old with MS, who mastered kneeling upright on a fit ball – I cannot remember why this skill was so important to her, but, she achieved her goal through slow gentle progressions. Her health and vitality were awesome! Inspiring!

    Aromatherapy Requests

    During some of the Frequency Attunements, Retreat Workshops and during some of the group sessions of Yoga etc, I have given some of you some essential oil options to assist with breathing and clearing airways. The main two essential oils that have potentially helped a few of you are from Young Living Basil and Young Living Aroma Siez. I am not always brand specific, but these 2 essential oils have some interesting clinical results. Due to this being a public newsletter, I will not go into detail here, but if you are interested or need support, please reach out. I am happy to extend pretty close to the wholesale price and just a little to cover postage for community members. Please reach out if you are interested.
