Maree Frawley holistic wellness advocate. Helping you to decipher information to formulate your best action plan.

As we welcome Spring and all the fluctuations of cold, warmth and all the varieties that Spring brings, we get back to basics to ensure that we continue to improve our overall wellbeing.

Healing and Transformation with @mareerejuvenate Maree Frawley. Therapeutic Yoga, Holistic Health Coaching.

Let’s keep it simple and heartfelt to deal with Westerly winds:

    • Enjoy the release with some antioxidants with in season berries… no chemical produce would be ideal.
    • Vitamin C and antioxidant herbal teas.
    • Stay hydrated with quality filtered water
    • Prioritise that restorative sleep you all deserve. If you have a bad night… remember your breathwork, your emotional health and to do things that help you feel inspired!
    • Move your body in ways that we cover in our sessions
    • Be mindful of your thought patterns and where they take you with stress or feeling good.

    Fascia – The basics

If you have not already… make a cup of your favourite tea – take a relaxing breath and enjoy this information – it is alot!…. You have plenty of time to process 💞

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds, separates, and connects every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, blood vessel, and structure in the body.

I like to think of Fascia as an effective goo that moves as we need it to move easily and gracefully….

Fascia is made primarily of collagen and elastin fibers suspended in a gel-like substance rich in water and hyaluronic acid.

Healthy fascia is pliable and nearly frictionless, allowing tissues to glide, absorb shock, transmit force efficiently, and maintain posture and shape.

    Hydrated vs. Dehydrated Fascia

    An Analogy for you….

Think of healthy, hydrated fascia like a soft, fully soaked sponge.

The healthy sponge can readily absorb nutrients, oxygen, and supportive fluids from the blood supply and surrounding tissues.

With each natural “squeeze and release” from movement or breath, it easily expels metabolic waste, inflammatory byproducts, and excess fluid into the lymphatic and circulatory systems for clearance. Making room for the essential nutrients that it needs.

This springy cushion and shock absorption distributes pressure smoothly across a wide area.

A dehydrated sponge, by contrast, becomes stiff, sticky, and compressed. It can no longer absorb helpful substances efficiently or clear waste well, so metabolic byproducts may linger and nutrient deficiency result.

This is can be why the same area in our body can be triggered with inflammation over and over again. It can be musculoskeletal, visceral (organs), cellular, lymph … and so on.

When Fascia has lost its cushioning bounce, loads transmit unevenly and harshly, creating focal pressure points that stress joints, cartilage, and bone.

Over time this inefficient force distribution can accelerate wear-and-tear and contribute to the mechanical stresses associated with osteoarthritis, including pathways toward reduced joint space and bone-on-bone contact.

Pause for a moment and jot down any thoughts or questions….

    Relationship to Lymph and Nerves

Fascia contains and supports lymphatic vessels and interstitial fluid spaces.

To help Lymph move well – we need healthy fascia!

Healthy, mobile fascia aids fluid dynamics and lymphatic return via mechanical pumping effects. Pumping is created via movement. Gentle movement of effective breathwork and gentle fluid movements.

Restricted or dehydrated fascia can impair fluid flow.

Fascia is also richly innervated (estimates suggest hundreds of millions of sensory nerve endings across the body-wide network) and forms protective sheaths around nerves.

Fascia contributes significantly to proprioception (where our body is in time and space), pain signaling, and overall sensory feedback.

Are you still with me…. hang in there!

Holistic elements of hydrated fascia and effective lymph movement require effective nerve supply.

Nerves need several key conditions for optimal function:

    • Adequate blood supply delivering oxygen and nutrients
    • Freedom from mechanical compression or irritation so they can glide and slide with movement
    • A balanced bio-chemical environment with low inflammation
    • Appropriate surrounding tissue support (including hydrated, mobile fascia)
    • Balanced alignment and loading so that joint and soft-tissue stresses do not create sustained pressure on nerve pathways

When fascia densifies or restricts, it can reduce glide, alter local fluid exchange, and contribute to nerve irritation, wear and tear and or sensitisation.

This is something that we talk about in our sessions….

Restoring fascial mobility and hydration helps protect nerve function.

Why Movement, Breathwork, and Professional Care Matter

Sponge analogy…. Varied and multi-directional movement acts to effectively and repeatedly wring and re-soak the sponge.

Fluid, easy, movements promote fluid exchange that help to prevent adhesions and keeps impact distribution even through the mechanics of your body.

Breathwork (especially lateral thoracic breathing) creates rhythmic pressure changes and gentle fascial stretch through continuous connections (as you know via our class quizzes 😂diaphragm to psoas and thoracic area fascia), supporting fluid flow, reducing tension, and aiding lymphatic/venous return.

As a note – this is why breathwork is key for cardiovascular health including blood pressure….

Specific Chiropractic Care can assist these efforts holistically. The spinal and joint alignment, nerve supply, mobility restrictions, and biomechanical imbalances are an important aspect of nerve, lymph, fascia and overall health.

By improving joint function and posture through specific adjustments, appropriate movement and breathing techniques, improvement can occur across:

    • Reducing abnormal mechanical stress on joints and surrounding soft tissues
    • Decreasing potential sources of nerve irritation or interference linked to joint, immune system and health dysfunction
    • Support more efficient movement patterns that help keep fascia mobile and hydrated
    • Enhance overall load-sharing across the musculoskeletal system, which may lessen focal pressures that contribute to wear and tear.

A quick note about Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Beware heavy treatments for Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Slow and steady improvements with wellbeing will always be best. MLD should not hurt or cause physical discomfort. I will cover this topic more in the next newsletter.

    Important….

Dehydrated or restricted fascia loses its ability to distribute force.

You have lived this – bone on bone and terms that you would have heard thrown around in your world

This dysfunction leads to more compressive loads onto joint surfaces, accelerating cartilage deterioration and the progression toward osteoarthritis symptoms.

Restoring glide, hydration, and balanced alignment supports healthier joint mechanics.

Aging is inevitable – is dehydrated fascia related to wear and tear

Yes, aging is inevitable, and changes in fascia are part of that process.

With age, fascia typically loses some water content, becomes less elastic, develops more collagen cross-links, and can thicken or densify in certain areas.

These shifts contribute to greater stiffness, reduced glide between tissue layers, and diminished shock absorption.

Depending on the individual, the techniques covered above are more than enough to improve and support recovery.

Link Between Dehydrated/Densified Fascia and Wear & Tear

Dehydrated or densified fascia reduces the tissue’s ability to distribute forces evenly.

Instead of acting like a resilient, springy network that shares load across muscles, tendons, and joints, restricted fascia can create uneven pressure points.

Altered mechanics increase focal stress on cartilage and bone surfaces in weight-bearing or high-use joints such as the knees, hips, lower back and shoulders.

Over years, that extra mechanical burden contributes to the progressive wear that characterizes osteoarthritis.

Research shows age-related fascial changes (including reduced hydration and increased stiffness) are associated with decreased joint range of motion and can compound the effects of inactivity, which further worsens densification.

I want to talk about hypermobility here… but I will save it for another newsletter.

Fascia changes are only one piece of a multifactorial process that also include prior injury, inflammation, muscle strength, alignment, and body weight. (plus more)

Can “Hydrating” Fascia Assist Bone-on-Bone Areas?

Improving fascial hydration and mobility (through consistent varied movement, appropriate loading, breathwork, manual therapies, and overall tissue care) can help in several supportive ways, especially in earlier stages or alongside other management strategies:

    • Better force distribution and shock absorption around the joint
    • Improved tissue glide, which may reduce compensatory tightness and secondary pain
    • Enhanced local fluid exchange and lymphatic flow
    • Support for healthier movement patterns that lessen abnormal joint loading and improve nerve supply
    • Potential reduction in nerve irritation from restricted surrounding tissues

In joints already showing advanced “bone-on-bone” changes (significant cartilage loss visible on imaging), hydrating fascia in most cases will not regenerate lost cartilage or reverse established structural damage.

    This requires in person discussion!

Holistic support can do help the surrounding soft-tissue system function more efficiently, which often improves comfort, mobility, stability, and quality of life.

Some people with radiographic bone-on-bone findings still move relatively well when the surrounding fascial and muscular support is optimized—this is why not everyone with the same X-ray findings has the same level of symptoms.

Practical approaches that support fascial health (movement that “squeezes and releases” the tissue like a sponge, specific and appropriate strength work for better load-sharing, mobility work, and skilled manual or chiropractic care for alignment and joint function) remain valuable at any age.

In short: dehydrated or restricted fascia is related to increased wear-and-tear stress, and improving its hydration and mobility can meaningfully assist function and comfort around compromised joints such as knees, hips, and shoulders.

For the Bone on Bone Discussion….

Yes, there are options that can enhance function, reduce pain, improve quality of life, and sometimes slow further deterioration in bone-on-bone (advanced osteoarthritis) scenarios.

Most approaches focus on symptom management, better load distribution, reduced inflammation, stronger supporting tissues, and overall joint resilience rather than reversing the bone-on-bone state itself.

Many people with radiographic bone-on-bone findings still achieve meaningful improvements in comfort and mobility.

    Core Evidence-Based Foundations (Strongly Recommended)

These form the foundation of care for knees, hips, shoulders, and other joints:

    • Exercise — Balanced strengthening of the muscles around the joint (especially quadriceps, hips, and core for lower-limb joints), low-impact aerobic activity, and neuromuscular training improve stability, reduce load on the joint surface, and often decrease pain.
    • Weight management (if overweight) — Every kilogram lost reduces force through the knees with each step. Even modest loss can meaningfully ease symptoms and slow progression. If underweight…. build muscle!
    • Activity modification and joint protection — Using walking poles, and other techniques we have discussed can help distribute load more evenly during daily tasks.

    Holistic Approaches

    Solutions!

    • Mind-body movement practices — REEJUV, Tai chi and yoga have good evidence for reducing pain, improving function, balance, and stiffness.
    • Manual therapies — Soft-tissue work, myofascial techniques, or chiropractic care aimed at improving surrounding tissue mobility, alignment, and fascial glide can help reduce secondary restrictions and improve overall mechanics (consistent with the fascia discussions we have had).
    • Anti-inflammatory nutrition – maybe next newsletter
    • Heat/cold therapy – sports balms to manage stiffness and pain.
    • Breathwork and stress reduction — Helpful for pain perception and overall well-being.

Well…. that is a foundation overview of Fascia

As you know I am qualified to be discussing this with you.

Whatever your next steps may be …

Be efficient and effective and have individual guidance and professional support to ensure efforts are specific to the needs your bio-individuality.

Maree Frawley Holistic Health Therapeutic Yoga @mareerejuvenate

As we settle into these August days together, I’ve been thinking about each of you and how we can support one another through the heart of winter.

I know how busy life gets, and how easy it is to feel a little run-down when the days are shorter and the air is colder. Joints feel a little tighter, aches come from out of the blue and then the feeling of being tired and run down.

Winter has a way of challenging our immune systems — with colder air, more time indoors, and less natural sunlight often leaving us a bit more vulnerable.

As you know; we can gently strengthen ourselves with the same care we’ve built over our long journey together

Healing and Transformation with @mareerejuvenate Maree Frawley. Therapeutic Yoga, Holistic Health Coaching.

Let’s keep it simple and heartfelt:

    • Nourish yourselves with plenty of warm soups, and immune-loving foods rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
    • Stay hydrated with herbal teas and water
    • Prioritise that restorative sleep you all deserve
    • Move your body in ways that feel good (even a brisk walk on a sunny winter morning)
    • Lean on stress-relieving moments that bring you joy. … obviously like our REEJUV sessions

Nurturing Your Hips for a Life Time of Mobility and Joy

One of the things I cherish most about working with you over the years is watching you embrace life fully — travelling, playing with grandchildren, gardening, or simply moving through your days with ease and confidence.

Our hips are central to that freedom. Including the Sacral Iliac Joints.

Our hips bear our weight, power our movement, and connect our upper and lower body.

When we experience chronic pain and labels such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, or degenerative changes, it can feel limiting.

With consistent, intelligent care we can soothe discomfort, maintain range, and keep you doing the things you love for many years to come.

The guiding formula we use is beautifully balanced:

    • Lengthen short, tight muscles
    • Strengthen long, weak muscles
    • Stabilise that new length and strength so your joints feel supported rather than strained.
    • Gentle movement also helps circulate fluids, move stagnant toxins, nourish the fascia (that supportive web around your muscles), and maintain healthy nerve supply to the area.

Here are some safe, effective movements you can do most days (start gently, listen to your body, and stop if you feel sharp pain).

    Mobility & Activation Sequence

    1. Lateral Thoracic Breathing with Pelvic Floor Activation and then gentle Imprint (as per class)
    2. Layer in bottom check activation on exhale
    3. Blokes Cross — Cross one ankle over the opposite knee.
    4. Imprint with glute activation option of legs out straight as practiced in class.
    5. (Remember the yawn, the breath, the activation of pelvic floor.

    Strengthening & Stabilising

Consistency matters far more than intensity. Even a few moments most days can improve circulation, reduce stiffness, support nerve health, and help your body clear metabolic waste through better movement.

Gentle consistent movement – every day… In some way!

Over time, this approach helps preserve cartilage where possible, reduces inflammation around bursae, and builds the resilience you need to keep living vibrantly.

The Emotional Hip Bridge Sequence is a beautiful favourite that we have modified for your health needs in a class sessions. It is a great sequence to support the specific rehabilitation activations that we will be learning in class

You’ve invested so much in your health already — these small daily acts of care are an act of self-love that honours the wonderful life you’re creating. If any of these feel tricky or you’d like modifications, just reach out; I’m here for you as always.

During class a couple of weeks back, I spoke about the kick line of the Dallas Cowboy Cheer girls in relation to hip health and different discussions about repetitive moves and impact moves. For those of you who want to have a look at just the kick line – skip through to the 3-minute mark. This routine is normally on the American Football Field, however, this performance gives you a great view of the kick line and split jump that we were talking about…..

…… If you did watch that – let me know if you want to start training that move for your 100th Birthday Party! 😂

Why Everyone’s Suddenly Talking About Fascia

(and Why It Matters to You)

Over the past few years, you may have noticed the word “fascia” popping up more and more — in wellness conversations, movement classes, and even in our own discussions here.

For a long time, this incredible connective tissue was overlooked, but better imaging and research have finally shown us what many hands-on Practitioners have felt for years:

Fascia is a living, sensory-rich web that influences how we move, feel, and heal.

Fascia is the continuous three-dimensional network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports, and connects every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, and blood vessel in your body.

    Everything is connected!

When Fascia is healthy, hydrated, and supple, it allows smooth gliding between tissues, transmits force efficiently during movement, and even plays a role in proprioception (your body’s sense of position) and very importantly fluid circulation.

When Fascia becomes tight, dehydrated, or restricted, stiffness, pain, reduced mobility, and even compensatory issues elsewhere in the body can result.

The benefits of gentle movement, managing injuries correctly, reduce prolonged sitting, calming stress and easing repetitive movements are good steps to assist Fascia.

How Fascia can be better supported

Chiropractic adjustments excel at restoring spinal alignment, improving nerve flow, and freeing joint restrictions.

Fascia work adds another powerful layer: it releases the soft-tissue “holding patterns” that can pull on the skeleton and limit how long an adjustment holds.

By addressing restrictions in this connective web through gentle sustained pressure, stretching, or movement, we help reduce protective tension, improve circulation, support nervous system regulation, and allow your body to integrate the adjustments more fully and hold changes longer.

The Magic in Our REEJUV Fusion Classes

This is exactly why our REEJUV Fusion classes feel so transformative.

We weave mindful movement, targeted mobility sequences, breath work, and fascial release techniques together in a way that hydrates and “de-glues” the tissue while building strength and stability.

The breathwork, multi-dimensional movements help restore that vital glide between layers, move fluids (helping clear toxins and deliver nutrients), calm the nervous system, and support the deep core and hip stabilisers we talked about earlier.

(This will all be tested on your end of year exam… that we never have!)

It’s gentle enough for most bodies yet effective at creating real change — leaving you feeling looser, taller, and more connected after each session.

Caring for your fascia is one of the kindest things you can do for long-term mobility, pain prevention, and overall vitality.

Simple daily habits like staying well hydrated, moving in varied ways, gentle stretching, and attending classes all make a real difference.

You’ve trusted me with your health journey for so long, and I’m continually inspired by your commitment.

Winter is nature’s profound pause—a sacred time of contraction, introspection, and deep replenishment.

In holistic traditions (including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and seasonal wellness practices), it corresponds to the slow, flowing, introspective energy that supports the kidneys, bladder, bones, and nervous system.

Just as trees shed leaves in autumn to prepare for winter’s rest, we too are invited to release, conserve, and rebuild our vital life force.

It’s not about high-energy expansion but quiet strength, inner luminosity, and grounded resilience. Think cocooning warmth amid the chill: soft textures, gentle movement, and soul-nourishing stillness.

Healing and Transformation with @mareerejuvenate Maree Frawley. Therapeutic Yoga, Holistic Health Coaching.

Key Energetic Themes for Winter Healing

Introspection & Reconnection: The longest nights of winter invite journal work, meditation, and reconnecting with your inner wisdom. It’s a time to dream, envision, and align with your essence. Working through techniques of letting go stored grief and realigning to the pathways of healing.

Rest & Conservation: Energy turns inward. Overdoing it depletes our foundational energy reserves. Winter encourages earlier bedtimes, slower days, and creating space for healing.

Emotional & Energetic Release: Suppressed fears, grief, or stagnation can surface. This is a powerful window for gentle release work—through breath, sound, or energy attunement—to clear what no longer serves you.

Nourishment & Replenishment: Focus on warming, hydrating, and mineral-rich practices to build immunity and vitality for the weeks ahead. Remember our broths… herbal teas and enriching soups.

    Holistic Practices for Winter

To put this into more practical terms.

Maintain Mindful Movement & Body Work

Gentle, restorative practices like mindful movement, yoga, or therapeutic movement help circulate energy without depletion. Focus on hips, lower back, and kidneys.

Our more rehearsed Fetal pose or supported inversions promote lymphatic flow and calm the nervous system. Pair with breathwork to warm from within.

    Energy Healing – Frequency Attunement

Reiki, sound healing, or personalised energy sessions are especially potent now. Winter supports deeper states of receptivity—ideal for clearing blockages, soothing adrenals, and restoring subtle body balance.

    Nutrition & Nourishment

Embrace seasonal, warming foods: root vegetables, soups, stews, bone broths, ginger, cinnamon, and cooked grains. Hydrate with herbal teas (nettle, tulsi, or ginger). In holistic views, this maintains the balance of cooling, moistening while supporting warmth and activity.

    Emotional & Mental Wellness

Journal prompts like “What am I ready to release?” or “What seeds am I nurturing for spring?” Counter seasonal blues with uplifting practices, community connection (in balanced doses), and boundaries around overstimulation.

Please try not to fall into language, I am too old, too tired, too overwhelmed…. for all of this stuff….. Your mental health and sense of purpose are everything when it comes to youthful vitality.

Another mention about Cortisol Spikes and Inflammation

In our modern world, constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR or EMF) from phones, Wi-Fi, laptops, and other devices can quietly act as a hidden stressor, subtly disrupting our body’s natural balance. Especially when using prior to sleep or having devices in your room.

Research suggests that chronic EMR exposure may contribute to elevated cortisol levels by activating the body’s stress response and increasing oxidative stress, which in turn can fuel low-grade chronic inflammation.

This ongoing cycle can leave you feeling wired yet exhausted, emotionally reactive, or physically heavy. By mindfully reducing EMR in your environment, such as using airplane mode at night, grounding practices, blue light filtering glasses, etc, you support your body’s detoxification pathways, help regulate stress hormones, and create more space for emotional release.

For your information, Defender Shield are the products that I have used for our family. Radiation-deflecting phone cases, the air tube headphones and blue light filtering glasses have been a compulsory health investment from me in safety equipment for my young people and ourselves. They are premium products from America (expensive) and have no real quality comparison or effective competitors at this time.

    Please keep your neck warm!

Over the years you have heard me talk about the importance of keeping your neck warm in winter.

I thought I would go into a holistic discussion as I know some of you do not feel as cold on an overall body level, but I would like to help your innerstanding on a holistic level of why to keep the neck warm.

Prevents External Cold Invasion (Holistic Energetic Gate)….

I know it sounds like gibberish….
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the back of the neck is the “Wind Gate”, where wind and cold easily enter the body, disrupting defensive life energy. Keeping the back of the neck warm, preserves active energy, supports Kidney energy, prevents colds, stiffness, headaches, and seasonal fatigue.

This keeps balanced energy rather than allowing contraction against the cold to result in depletion.

Supports Circulation, Lymph & Fascia Flow (Form & Fluid Function)

The neck houses major blood vessels (carotid arteries, jugular veins), lymphatic pathways, and deep cervical fascia layers that envelop muscles, thyroid, trachea, and nerves.

Cold causes vasoconstriction and fascial tightening, leading to stagnation, puffiness, and reduced immune drainage. Ice therapy is great here for managing inflammation, however cold all the time should be avoided.

Gentle warmth promotes smooth lymphatic movement, better oxygenation, and fluid vitality — aligning with winter’s call for deep nourishment and preventing the sluggishness that can affect the whole body including brain fog.

Nourishes Thyroid & Metabolic Warmth (Endocrine & Functional Balance)

The thyroid gland sits prominently in the anterior neck, regulating metabolism, temperature, and energy.

Exposure to cold can stress this area, slowing function and contributing to winter fatigue or hormonal imbalances.

Keeping the neck warm supports healthy thyroid activity, maintains core warmth, helping to balance cooling/restorative and active warmth energies essential for creating balanced health.

Soothes Cranial Nerves, Especially Vagus (CN X) for Nervous System Calm

Multiple cranial nerves traverse or are influenced by the neck, including the vagus nerve (the longest cranial nerve), accessory nerve (CN XI for neck/shoulder muscles), and glossopharyngeal….. ooh another big name!!!

Cold-induced tension or constriction can irritate these pathways, heightening stress responses, affecting swallowing, voice, heart rate, digestion, and mood.

Warmth relaxes surrounding fascia and muscles, supporting vagal tone for better parasympathetic “rest & digest” function — crucial during winter’s inward healing focus.

Reduces Tension in Muscles & Fascia for Structural Ease & Energy Flow

From an anatomical perspective, the neck’s sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, and deep stabilizers connect directly to the jaw (TMJ), shoulders, and pelvic floor via fascial trains.

Cold tightens these tissues, creating compensatory holding patterns that restrict movement and subtle energy channels.

Maintaining warmth preserves natural cervical curve, eases myofascial tension, supports posture and cranial-sacral rhythm, and allows freer flow through the throat physically and energetically and — preventing winter-related headaches, jaw clenching, or emotional stagnation.

Holistic Health with Maree Frawley, Maree Rejuvenate @mareerejuvenate

A bit more clarification of fascia, lymph, TMJ and pelvic floor

The contracting energy of winter needs lymphatic drainage, TMJ release, and pelvic floor fascia working well to keep your immune system strong. They are profound allies for whole-body health with physical release and energetic restoration.

The lymphatic system — our gentle waste-clearance and immune network — often slows in the colder months with reduced movement and more indoor time.

Lymphatic work helps to move stagnant fluid, reduces puffiness, eases sinus congestion, and calms the nervous system, inviting clarity and lightness to the body and mind. We assist this every session of our breathwork and mindful movement.

When combined with mindful Trigeminal nerve release, we soften the common winter-held tension in the jaw (a storehouse for stress and unexpressed emotions), relieving jaw pain, headaches, and neck tightness while freeing energy flow through the throat centre – physically and energetically.

Extending this work deeper, we bring awareness to the pelvic floor fascia — the interconnected web linking the jaw, diaphragm, and pelvic bowl — releasing chronic holding patterns that can trap fear, grief, or fatigue during this introspective season.

    So….

Keep doing what you can! Gentle movement, breathwork, our holistic tecniques.

No matter how bad your pain and inflammation may get, – we need to keep you moving within these parameters to assist your overall wellbeing including; brain health, nervous system function, muscular skeletal, emotional and hormonal wellbeing… just to mention a few!😂

Cortisol overload and adrenal support with @mareerejuvenate

Just as the trees let go of their vibrant foliage to prepare for winter’s rest, autumn offers us a powerful season for healing and detoxification—not just for our bodies, but for our hearts and minds too.

Autumn, is the perfect time to gently cleanse on a physical level while creating space for emotional renewal, releasing old patterns, stored emotions, and anything that no longer serves our highest good.

Whether you’re craving deeper clarity, inner peace, or simply more energy as the days grow shorter, embracing an autumn release can support your body’s natural healing processes while nurturing your emotional wellbeing.

Heavy Metal Clearing with Maree Frawley @mareerejuvenate Therapeutic Yoga & Holistic Health Mapping

What does a Holistic Cleanse look like?

A holistic cleanse in autumn is far more than just a juice fast or strict diet — it’s a gentle, whole-person approach to renewal that honours the body, mind, and emotions in harmony with the season.

Physically, it might include warming, liver-supportive foods like bitter greens, root vegetables, and herbal teas, along with increased hydration and gentle movement to aid the body’s natural detoxification pathways. As you know I have had great results with Epsom salts/ bentonite clay foot baths, foot patches, castor oil compresses used across monthly practices.

On the emotional and mental level, it involves creating space for release through practices such as journaling, breathwork, meditation, or quiet reflection, helping you let go of stored emotions, limiting beliefs, and old patterns that weigh you down.

Spiritually, it invites stillness and reconnection with nature — perhaps through bush or beach walks or simply pausing to witness the falling leaves — so you emerge lighter, clearer, and more aligned with your authentic self as you prepare for the deeper rest of winter.

For anyone who is interested in Heavy Metal Release Program which educates on cleansing, releasing, detoxing and detox binding and removal, feel welcome to read more here.

    Hot and Cold Therapy

As promised here is a very brief overview that hopefully clarifies when to use heat or ice packs as therapy.

When it comes to supporting your body’s natural healing during an autumn detox and any time of year, understanding ice versus heat therapy can make a gentle yet powerful difference in how you manage inflammation, tension, and emotional stress.

Ice therapy (cold packs, cold showers, or brief cold exposure) is ideal in the acute phase of injury or when swelling and sharp pain are present — typically in the first 48–72 hours after strain or during inflammatory flare-ups.

By constricting blood vessels, ice numbs the area, reduces swelling, and calms overactive tissues, which can also help soothe an agitated nervous system.

In the early morning hours, when cortisol naturally peaks as part of your body’s awakening response, a short burst of cold therapy can assist in avoiding an exaggerated cortisol spike. The cooling stimulus promotes a more balanced autonomic response and may help prevent the amplification of stress hormones.

Heat therapy (warm compresses, heating pads, baths, or gentle saunas) shines when you’re working with chronic stiffness, tight muscles, or lingering emotional holding patterns that manifest as physical tension. Heat increases blood flow, relaxes soft tissues, eases joint stiffness, and supports the release of stored emotions by encouraging the body to let go rather than constrict.

However, applying heat before going to bed, can sometimes magnify the natural cortisol rise. As you are resting/ sleeping and the heat pack decreases in temperature, your body tries to maintain the heat that was comfortable and creates more inflammation to the area to maintain the heat that was relaxing, which long term creates more inflammation and higher cortisol levels than needed.

One further thought with Cortisol Spikes and Inflammation

In our modern world, constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR or EMF) from phones, Wi-Fi, laptops, and other devices can quietly act as a hidden stressor, subtly disrupting our body’s natural balance. Especially when using prior to sleep or having devices in your room.

Research suggests that chronic EMR exposure may contribute to elevated cortisol levels by activating the body’s stress response (HPA axis) and increasing oxidative stress, which in turn can fuel low-grade chronic inflammation through elevated inflammatory cytokines and impaired antioxidant defenses.

Mind Body Soul Energetic Alignment with Maree. Sound Therapy, Aromatherapy, Crystals and Frequencies with @mareerejuvenate

Some Information to fill the space in a conversation…

Recently I read a discussion where Sound Practitioners were debating whether sound, tuning of bowls and frequency are important or something that is ok to overlook.

Meaning, should a Practitioner just play bowls and tuning forks in a way that sounds lovely or is there a reason to ensure their tuning, frequency and resonance.

In the discussion, the good old “pseudoscience” term got thrown around with statements that – frequency does not matter and is only relatively new as a concept and idea.

This got me thinking and I wanted to share with you why frequency does matter and why I would like you to be informed.

Our cells are naturally vibrational. Every part of a cell — from the tiny powerhouses inside them to the outer membrane. Each cell has its own natural rhythm and can sense and respond to sound waves or electromagnetic frequencies from outside. These vibrations can gently influence important cell processes like sending signals, turning genes on or off, making proteins, producing energy, and even helping cells move or change — all without creating heat.

This concept is far from new: ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and indigenous cultures, employed sound, music, and vibrations (via instruments, chanting, or rhythmic motion) for healing wounds, pain, and mental states, recognizing the body’s responsiveness to frequency long before modern science.

As a tangent, there is a beautiful documented medical case of a cat purring and saving the life of a premi baby. Here are some interesting facts about cats purring (not necessarily a cute cat video).

While frequency is often dismissed as fringe or pseudoscience in some circles, contemporary medicine routinely harnesses targeted frequencies in proven treatments—such as therapeutic ultrasound for tissue heating and repair, shockwave therapy for breaking kidney stones or stimulating tendon healing, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy for bone regeneration and pain relief, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for neurological conditions. So as you can see, frequency-based interventions are an established part of evidence-based care.

Holistic Musicians embody an understanding of frequency that assists grounding how frequency can heal and support cells. I have seen so many examples of healing with holistic frequency in my professional career and the one takeaway you could take from all this information is –

Be mindful of the sounds, frequencies (light and sound), aromas, images and words that are in your immediate environment. The frequency does influence you on a cellular level.

    Tuesday 8.55am

    Thursday 10.45am

Just when you thought the information should be finished….

Here is one more important discussion…..

    The Vagus Nerve

A follow up post Tuesday’s class – an extra 5 minutes of information. (It could actually be 10 minutes as I might have gone a little extra to make it as simple and straightforward as possible.)

The vagus nerve (pronounced VAY-gus, from the Latin for “wandering”) is the longest cranial nerve in your body and a superstar of your “rest-and-digest” nervous system.

    Where it is….

It starts in the brainstem (the lower part of your brain), exits through the skull, and travels down both sides of your neck (near the carotid artery), through the chest (passing the heart and lungs), and deep into the abdomen where it branches out to the stomach, liver, spleen, and most of the intestines. Think of it as a long, meandering cable that connects your brain directly to many of your major organs.

    Why it is important….

The vagus nerve is the main highway of your parasympathetic nervous system — the calming opposite of the fight-or-flight stress response. It:

    • Slows your heart rate
    • Helps you digest food properly
    • Lowers inflammation
    • Regulates breathing
    • Sends information back and forth between your gut and brain (about 80% of its fibres are “listening” to your organs)

In simple terms, it helps your body switch out of emergency mode and into recovery, repair, and calm mode.

    Relationship to overall wellbeing….

Good “vagal tone” (how well and efficiently the nerve works) is strongly linked to:

    • Lower stress and anxiety
    • Better mood and resilience
    • Improved digestion and gut health
    • Stronger immune regulation
    • Better sleep and recovery

When the vagus nerve is toned and active, you feel calmer, digest better, and recover faster from stress. Poor vagal tone is associated with chronic stress, inflammation, digestive issues, and mood struggles. Simple things like slow deep breathing, humming, singing, yawning, cold exposure, or laughter can stimulate it…. (Alas my distractions to assist your laughter 😂)

    Spinal health connection

The vagus nerve itself doesn’t run inside the spinal column, but it passes through the neck right near the upper cervical vertebrae (C1–C3 area). Neck tension, poor posture, or upper cervical instability can irritate or compress the nerve and reduce its function.

On the flip side, good spinal mobility and posture support better vagus nerve signalling.

Gentle neck and spinal work can indirectly help vagal tone.

    Pelvic floor health connection

The vagus nerve does not directly innervate the pelvic floor muscles or pelvic organs (those are mainly controlled by nerves coming from the lower spine — sacral nerves). However, there is a strong indirect relationship:

    • When you’re stressed (sympathetic dominance), the pelvic floor often tightens or “guards” as part of the whole-body tension pattern.
    • Activating the vagus nerve promotes overall relaxation, which makes it easier for the pelvic floor to release and function normally.
    • Lateral Thoracic breathing (which strongly stimulates the vagus nerve) coordinates beautifully with pelvic floor movement — they work together like a piston.
    • Better vagal tone can reduce pelvic pain, ease tension-related bladder/bowel issues, and support sexual function by calming the nervous system.

In short: a happy vagus nerve helps create the calm internal environment that your pelvic floor (and whole body) thrives in.

Just in case you need a visual…. here you go….

Chiropractic Care and the Vagus Nerve

Chiropractic care can support vagus nerve function by correcting misalignments (subluxations) in the upper cervical spine (particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae), where the nerve exits the brainstem and travels down the neck. This can be as gentle as their advanced trigger point, not always manual adjustment.

These gentle adjustments help reduce irritation or interference along the nerve pathway, potentially improving vagal tone — the measure of how effectively the vagus nerve activates the body’s “rest-and-digest” (parasympathetic) response.

Better vagal tone helps reduce adrenal overload and is linked to lower stress and anxiety, improved heart rate variability, better digestion, lower inflammation, and enhanced overall wellbeing.

Studies suggest that optimising spinal alignment in the neck region helps the vagus nerve communicate more freely between the brain and major organs, promoting relaxation and recovery. This approach works well alongside other vagus-stimulating habits like our breathwork, mindful movement and postural awareness.

As you know, I am a huge advocate for Chiropractic Care to support nervous system function and to support the body to maintain cellular strength and overall vitality. If you have any questions about suitability for you, just come along and have a chat.

I feel that if you are reading this sentence – I would love to give you a big hug and say – well done!

I hope you enjoyed the information 🤗
